History

In 1598 the first Spanish settlement was put on the Rio Grande River by Juan de Onate. In 1610 Santa Fe was founded and made the capital of New Mexico.  When Mexico achieved its independence from Spain in 1821, New Mexico became a province of Mexico, and trade was opened with the United States. The U.S. acquired most of New Mexico in 1848, as a result of the Mexican War, and the remainder in the 1853 Gadsden Purchase. New Mexico became a part of the United States on January 6, 1912.  It was put into the United States as the 47th state. In the next year, American settlers began arriving in New Mexico via the Santa Fe Trail. If you travel to New Mexico you might want to go see the White Sands National Monument. It contains the largest gypsum dune field in the world. The result of water evaporating from transitory lakes with a high mineral content, gypsum is windswept into beautiful white sand dunes. Some of those dune can be 275 square miles in size.

The capital of New Mexico

In early 1990, Walter Haut, who had been public information officer at Roswell Army Air Field in 1947, began thinking about the idea of a home for information on the Roswell Incident and other UFO event.  A majority of visitors make a point to come to Roswell to see the Museum and to be in the city where the best-known UFO incident occurred.

The capital of New Mexico is an amazing place to see. Did you know that Taos Pueblo has been inhabited for over a thousand years. New Mexicos state capital was built on December 8, 1966.

Northeast Regional Artist ANDY WARHOL

Students learned about American artist Andy Warhol and his Pop Art style. Warhol called his studio “The Factory” and mass produced fine art prints of everyday objects from popular culture like the Campbell’s soup can and celebrity images. Fourth grade artist looked at the popular Kansas City image of the Shuttlecock sculptures on the Nelson-Atkins lawn and created a linoleum cut block for printmaking using traditional gauges and printing inks. They had to really think about the negative and positive spaces as they carved away the parts of the block that they did NOT want to print.

Southeast Regional Artist GEORGE RODRIGUE

Fourth grade studied the art of New Orleans artist George Rodigue and his famous “Blue Dog.” They learned about Cajun culture and the legend of the Loup Garou that the Blue Dog is partially inspired by. Students then created their own blue dog giving them a personality or character of their own choosing! Students had to break down the contour of the dog into basic shapes to create their compositions. They also studied color theory and learned how to create secondary and tertiary colors using only primary!

Midwest Regional Artist WALT DISNEY

After learning about how Walt Disney got his start in Kansas City, students learned the basic steps of stop motion animation. Using new technology, iStopMotion, as well as iMovie, students created cut paper stop motion animation with sound! Students were challenged to create a character that could introduce itself in a 20 second film. Fourth grade got super creative!
